The development of MIDAS Metall® Onyx did not begin on the drawing board, but rather through dialogue with customers, fabricators, designers, architects, and creative surface designers. Time and again, a clear need emerged: the search was on for a dark metal surface with depth, character, and presence—one that did not require a patina, strong visual effects, or optical overlays. Dark surfaces have been in high demand in interior design for years. They create contrast, tranquility, and a sense of quality. At the same time, very dark materials always pose the challenge that they can quickly appear flat, closed off, or visually heavy. This is precisely where the development of MIDAS Metall® Onyx began.

The goal was to create an alloy that is dark but not dull. Expressive but not loud. Minimalist but not lifeless. A surface that not only complements spaces but also gives them character.

Deeply dark even in low light

This exceptionally dark metallic look is not achieved through a post-application patina or additional effects. The depth comes from the alloy itself. As a result, the surface remains clear, authentic, and true to the material. MIDAS Metall® Onyx does not look like a treated metal that has been darkened, but rather like a material in its own right with natural intensity. This quality makes the alloy particularly interesting for sophisticated interior design, high-end commercial projects, and custom design concepts.

The dark base tone lends the surface a sense of calm and strength. At the same time, fine gold-colored particles ensure that MIDAS Metall® Onyx remains vibrant. These particles may already be visible during mixing and later appear subtly, depending on the application, lighting, and surface finish. They lend the surface additional depth and prevent it from appearing rigid or monotonous.
